Please note that importing hundreds of bookmarks or favorites can take a while and you will not be able to use your computer for anything else during the import process.
What to Search
| Bkmk | Search Netscape bookmarks. The first time you select this option, you will be prompted for the location of your bookmark.htm file which is located in the Netscape directory. After selecting a bookmark file, StartGen will import them so they can be quickly searched. You will need to rerun this import routine occassionally to update the internal StartGen bookmark table. |
| Favs | Search Internet Explorer bookmarks. The first time you select this option, you will be prompted for the location of your IE favorites directory, which is " |
| Links | This option allows you to search the links you have added to the various start and directory pages you have defined using StartGen. |
| KB | Point to a directory and StartGen will list all the files it contains. Enter a search string and indicate whether you want to search the filename, full text or both. StartGen will list the matching files. |
Bookmark Search
After StartGen has imported your bookmarks, enter a search phrase and click the "Search" button to display matching bookmarks. Use the "Search Field" check boxes to indicate what aspect of the bookmarks you want to search. Use the A,B,C...Z buttons to quickly filter the list by the first letter of the bookmark name. The "All" button restores the list to include all bookmarks. Use the "..." button next to the bookmark filename to update the bookmark list or import a different bookmark file.
Favorites Search
This works the same as the bookmark search feature.
Links Search
This works the same as the bookmark search feature except that you don't have to import anything.
Knowledgebase Search
The idea here is to designate a directory as your "knowledgebase". I call mine "notes". Then any time you come across a Web page that you want to archive, save it to this "notes" directory. Eventually you'll end up with a collection of files representing your various interests. This feature of StartGen can be used to quickly find relevant information in these various files. Searching your knowledgebase directory works the same as the other searches except that you can make the searches case sensitive. You can tell StartGen to search all subdirectories beneath the designated directory as well.
The "Show Text" option tells StartGen to display text from the file showing where the search string appears. This option only applies after you have searched for something. Clicking the "Find Next" button displays succeeding occurances of the string in the file. This feature can only search the first 124KB of each file in this version of StartGen.
The "List Links" option tells StartGen to list the links that occur in whatever file you happen to click on. If they begin with "http://", then you can open them in your browser either by double clicking them or single clicking them and clicking the right mouse button to display the popup menu.
