Brainstorming Tip: Hold an Imaginary Meeting With People You Admire  

Ask them questions and imagine what their responses might be. I am constantly amazed at how clear, useful and insightful their imagined answers often are. Who to select? Well, people you have studied, listened to, and watched. I'm not sure exactly how the "imprint" of their personality is formed in consciousness.

For brainstorming strategic issues related to my software company, I "invite" people like Bill Gates, Andy Grove, and Michael Dell. For brainstorming self-development product ideas, I choose a different set of industry leaders. They have to be people that I have studied. It helps if I have heard their voice, but I have used this technique to hold meetings with Ben Franklin, Emerson and others whom I've never heard speak. With these authors, I have read and re-read their writings to the point where I feel I "know" them well enough to extrapolate their responses to my questions. (This article is based on suggestions by Napoleon Hill in either Think and Grow Rich or The Law of Success).

Information Management Tips  
The more accessible information is, the more likely you are to use it. This is why I use the Windows Shortcut key feature so extensively. I even set up a help file to remind me what I've assigned each key until I've memorized them. I assigned the Ctrl-Alt-H shortcut key to quickly display this file when needed. I have found it helpful to design the information that is at my fingertips (accessible very quickly). Some information I reference because I have to. But there is another category of information that I reference only if it is convenient enough to reference. For example, when programming, I leave the help disk in the CD ROM drive. This may be why the multimedia CD market faltered: it just wasn't convenient enough to access the information. You had to find the CD, put it in the drive, figure out the user interface, and navigate through the table of contents or do a search that may or may not find the information you were looking for. What information do you have at your fingertips where you work? Can you rearrange your workspace to make the information you use the most more accessible?

The more you have systematized the process of filing new ideas the more likely you are to get them and be able take advantage of them. This is why I keep a stack of blank non-lined paper within arms reach where I work. However, once the idea is captured, the question becomes: Where do you put it? Decisions, decisions. I find it helpful to eliminate the number of decisions I need to make by systemizing the idea-logging process up front. This makes it ecological to quickly record ideas when they pop into my mind at unexpected times. This allows me to quickly log them and then get back to whatever I was working on without too much disruption. The question I have for you is: Do you think it is wiser to discipline your mind to stay focused on the task at hand, or to take a moment to record the idea before getting back to the task at hand? For myself, it depends on the circumstances and the quality of the new idea. When I'm under a tight deadline I am more likely to let the ideas pass. Nurturing the ability to concentrate is vital to effective knowledgework, but sometimes the ideas that come to mind are just too useful to turn away.

Eat Right for Your Blood Type

Naturopathic physician Peter D'Adamo has written a controversial book called Eat Right for Your Type, in which he describes how each of the four major blood types differ in their ability to assimilate the nutrients in food. While this approach is not endorsed by some highly respected authors I've consulted, there appears to be a large number of people who have benefited from it. The discussion groups at Dr. D'Adamo's Web site are quite active.

Dr. D'Adamo's book appears to be a sincere effort based on scientific observation, so I was surprised to hear that respected medical and naturopathic physicians questioned the scientific basis for the approach. So many people are benefiting from Dr. D'Adamo's work that I feel there must be at least some truth to it.

If you agree with Dr. D'Adamo's approach, you may want to refine this "taste bud" test based on your blood type. According to Dr. D'Adamo's research, the suggestions made in this chapter are compatible with all blood types except where noted.

I spoke recently with Dr. Joe Pizzorno, President of the highly regarded Bastyr University , as to why Dr. D'Adamo's were so controversial. He indicated that it is generally agreed that the blood types evolved as D'Adamo states, and that the blood types react to the different lectins in foods as he describes. What is controversial is how these facts translate into better health. Dr. Andrew Weil doesn't believe there is any scientific basis for these claims, which is strange because the book explains the scientific basis in detail. In addition, Dr. D'Adamo has tested and refined his ideas in over 15 years of clinical trials. Nevertheless, the approach may work better for some than others. If you are looking for ways to improve your life through nutrition, this looks like an approach worth trying. Everyone I know who has tried the approach speaks highly of the results they have gotten. All information in Chapter 8 of the revised edition of Brain Dancing has been updated to incorporate Dr. D'Adamo's suggestions.

Check out what Dr. Weil has to say about Tea Tree Oil. I use 100% pure Austrailian Tea Tree Oil distributed by Desert Essence. It is available at health food stores for under $10. I've been using it to eliminate toenail fungus which had eaten away most of my toenails. Yes, they were totally gone.
