One of the many side benefits from developing your visualization muscle (imagination) is an improved memory.
Your are more likely to remember something if you create a context in which to remember it. If you are learning Java, you are more likely to remember aspects of the language while building a Java application than just reading about Java. Having a problem to solve focuses attention and provides precise feedback on the effectiveness of your actions/learning.
